Information Technology 2005 Student Technology Survey
Posted by on Monday, April 09, 2007 4:46 PM
At the end of Fall term 2005 a web based survey was posted for about 4 weeks to gather feedback relating to COCC’s primary student technology services.

The summary below includes many neutral feedback comments as areas of concern simply because these helped show areas where we are not making students as happy as we may be able to so they helped to indicated places where we can improve. In no area did we see serious problems beyond a few isolated comments which were made.

Total respondents:  215

Key Takeaways

v      Lab Satisfaction:

o         Overall lab satisfaction is very high, but some areas identified where we could improve were:

§         45.5% are neutral or feel technology fees are unreasonable

16% disagreed that our fees are reasonable

§         36% felt neutral or disagreed that our lab assistants are not friendly/knowledgeable

         Only 4.5% actually disagreed

§         32% feel there are not enough computers

8.5% feel strongly that there are not enough computers

o         The main themes regarding the comments in this area included:

§         some labs are noisy and make studying difficult

§         availability of computers appears to becoming an issue

§         technology fees and pay-for-print costs were another big concern

o         70% of respondents use our drop-in labs

§         64% of these primarily use the library

v      Access to Internet from home

o         9.5% of students do not have access to the internet from home.

§         6% of respondents do not have a home computer

§         3.5% of respondents with a computer do not connect to the internet

o         22.8% of our students use dialup to access the internet

o         67.7% have a computer that has a high speed internet connection

v      Personal Computer

o         93% have a Windows based computer

§         35% of these are laptops and 95% of all Windows computers use Windows XP

o         5.5% have a Macintosh computer and 64% of these are laptops

o         19% use their personal computer for class work while on the COCC Campus

v      Wireless

o         36% of the respondents have used COCC’s wireless service

§         It appears that most students with a laptop have at least tried our service

§         25% of the students that have used our wireless service are not satisfied

The main reason was availability and incomplete coverage

v      Blackboard

o         90.5% of respondents have used Blackboard

o         10% of the Blackboard users expressed dissatisfaction

§         One of the main comments was a desire for more instructors to use Blackboard due to confusion about not seeing all of their classes in Blackboard.

v      Other

o         COCC web page usability was criticized (more will surely be in our web survey)

o         15% of respondents have NOT used their COCC My Documents storage.

o         Comments were also shared regarding difficulty logging in to various systems.

Changes made due to the results of this survey

1.       Added additional help links relating to email and Blackboard usage on COCC web site.

2.       Increased attention on monitoring lab usage to help identify the need for more workstations or locations

3.       Discussions have begun about expanding our wireless service during 06-07 FY.

4.       Reminding lab staff to keep an eye on lab noise and environment.

5.       Continuing and expanding training for lab attendants to help better support students. Marcia is planning to share “Top issues” with rest of IT department so that new ideas and training can be considered.
